Netherlands justice ministry chooses 3BView to remove metadata
The Raad voor de Rechtspraak, which has overall responsibility for administering the justice system in the Netherlands, has chosen 3BView’s metadata cleaning software to help ensure the security of its electronic documents.
The Rechtspraak needed to counteract the dangers of information leaking from the sensitive documents it was dealing with on behalf of the country’s justice system. In particular, it was concerned about author information in the metadata of Microsoft Word documents, which needed to be removed before the documents were posted on the internet.
The Rechtspraak had not previously used a metadata cleaning solution. Having looked at available software from a number of companies, the department chose the 3BClean metadata removal tool from 3BView, because it provided the most effective overall solution to handle the metadata problem.
One particular feature that was a factor in this decision was that 3BClean could be used via a web interface, with no software to install on the department’s desktops. This made using the 3BClean solution extremely straightforward, and meant the department could roll out the metadata removal solution rapidly and cost-effectively without a lengthy installation and configuration programme.
“We found it very easy to install and configure 3BClean,” said David Vermeulen, IT-Architect at the Rechtspraak. “The website interface is very functional and lean. 3BView also provided excellent support and good direct communication.”
At the moment, the solution is used for Microsoft Word documents, which are created with Office 2003. The Rechtspraak uses 3BClean to remove metadata and convert these Word documents to PDF.
For the future, the Rechtspraak is also planning to use 3BClean to automatically remove metadata when Word documents are emailed.
